On April 15th Planning/Yucca staff will present a history of the Yucca Mountian project in Inyo County. This presentation will be to the Board of Supervisors at a special meeting being held at the Tecopa Communnity Center at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, April 15.
- Yucca Mountain Project is Currently Being Shut Down: In February of 2009, the White House eliminated funding for the Yucca Mountain project from the budget and directed the Department of Energy (DOE) to withdraw its application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license to build the repository. The Yucca Mountain site is now effectively closed. In May 2010, DOE ordered the Yucca Mountain project's main contractors to stop all work except archiving records. On October 1, 2010, the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, the organization within DOE responsible for the Yucca Moutain program, was formally disbanded, with responsibility for waste disposal activities transferred to DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy. What does this mean for Inyo County? Staff is currently working on completing the archiving of all records, data and reports regarding its Yucca Mountain program. County staff will continue to monitor the status of Yucca Mountain and will update this webpage as appropriate.
